BRIEF HISTORY OF KURDISTAN
Fadhil Qaradaghi
Kurdistan is the land of the Kurds. The Kurds talk an Indo-Euroupian
language. They are descendants of two great group of races: The
Pre-Indo-Europian peoples like the Gutians, Lulluians, Khurrians,
Kassites...etc., and the Indo- Europian peoples which the Medes are the most
known one.The former who talked a hitherto unknown group of language
generally called Asiatic or Caucasian appear from the third millennium
B.C.and remained to the first millennium B.C.while the immigration of the
Medes and other Indo- Europian peoples started from the early second
millennium B.C.
Kurdistan had some great kingdoms like the Mittanian Kingdom in the Northern
Kurdistan. The Mittanins were an Indo- Europian ruling class who dominated
the Khurrians who were an ancient and great Asiatic People. The Mittanian
Kingdom took a great part in the politics of those ages. It had war and
peace relations with Pharaos, Hittets and Kassites.
The
Kassites who lived in Southern Kurdistan conquered Mesopotamia in 17th
century B.C. and ruled it for more than four centuries.
Media in turn played a great role in that world after it (with the
Babylonians) put an end to the Assyrian Empire 612 B.C. But in the century
later Media lost its Empire to the Persian king Cyrus ( Kurush ). Since then
no great Kingdom was built in Kurdistan but only some small kingdoms and
principaulities. Kurdistan became since then a road of armies of the
kingdoms and a field of conflict between them.
Ancient peoples of Kurdistan were pagans. After Zoroaster ( Zaratushtra )
preached his new monoistic religion they adapted the new religion gradualy,
but Zoroasterism lost most of its monoistic creed and turned to
fire-worship. Christinity got slight progress in Kurdistan and nowadays the
christian are Syrianics . The majority of Kurds are muslims and they took
distinct role in the Islamic civilization.
